Attorney General Martha Coakley Will Run For US Senate  | read this item

Attorney General Martha Coakley announced today that she is running for the Senate position that was vacated by Edward M. Kennedy.

In a press conference held at the Omni Parker House, she says, “The urgency of this time is clear and that urgency drives my decision. Today I announce my candidacy for the United States Senate.”

AG Martha Coakley is a 56-year-old Medford Democrat and has held positions such as assistant district attorney, federal prosecutor, Middlesex District Attorney, and her current role as state attorney general.

Other Democrats who are seriously considering going for the position are US Representatives Michael E. Capuano, Stephen F. Lynch, and Edward J. Markey; and possibly former US representative Joseph P. Kennedy II.

Meanwhile, Republican such as former lieutenant governor Kerry Healey; state Senator Scott P. Brown of Wrentham; former US attorney Michael J. Sullivan; and former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling are also considering going for the Senate.
