Dutch Speed Skater Disqualification in the 2010 Winter Olympics Losses Gold Medal  | read this item

Dutch speed skater Sven Kramer was disqualified in men’s speed skating event at the 2010 Winter Olympics yesterday. He supposed to be getting the gold medal. While he was making his rounds around the track, he looked at his coach who directed him to another lane. He was in the wrong lane for the last 8 laps around the track, an elementary error unprecedented for a skater of his stature at the Olympics. Kramer’s dream of taking home three gold medals was shattered. He was skating like a machine until he hesitated for a split second on the 17th of 25 laps and his coach wrongly pointed him to the inside of the track, although he should have taken the outside lane.

He could have bagged the gold because he is four seconds faster than Lee Seung-hoon of South Korea who was declared winner setting a new Olympic record of 12:58.55, an unexpected win.

Coach Gerard Kemkers skated over to tell him of the disqualification. Kramer reacted with disbelief, kicking the ice. Kramer cursed Kemkers. “Damn it, the asshole sent me down the wrong lane!”

He later told Dutch public broadcaster NOS. “I was doing great. I am not one to place the blame on other people, but there is no way around it now. Right before the marker, Gerard said: ‘go inside’. I was going in the right direction, but he made me doubt (…) Later you realise you changed wrong at one of the most important moments in your life.”

Kemkers said he had made a “disastrous error”. “It all happened in a split second (…) My absolute worst moment,” he said, adding that when the realisation hit him: “I knew my world had just collapsed on me.”
