Now another company in the tech world will join the tablet wars. Information and Communications Technology (ICT) solutions provider Huawei will start to make their own in the gadget market by entering Philippines’ wide array of tablet world. They’re presenting their flagship device, the MediaPad.

“We are [currently] building our brand. So we want to transform our company that sells millions of devices to a single company to a known brand that sells a single device to a single consumer. The MediaPad is our flagship product for this,” Huawei Device Philippines Terminal Marketing Manager Emerald Dimapilis said.

MediaPad weighs only 390 grams and has a thickness of 0.4 inches. It runs in a Qualcomm dual-core 1.2GHz processor, supported by Google Android Market. It supports 1080P full HD video playback and has a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera and a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera with autofocus and HD video recording capabilities.

“Such list of specs is already bankable,” says Chris Dy, a Filipino entrepreneur who has been looking for a decent tablet pc lately. He’s into boats for sale in Philippines business and he needs the gadget for his day to day business transactions.

Philippines started the celebration as they welcome baby girl Danica May Camacho. Although her official birth time was two minutes advance before October 31st, her doctors of the Jose Fabella Memoril Hospital said that it was close enough to count for a Monday birthday. Baby Danica is the second child of Florante Camacho and Camille Galura. Her father is a struggling driver and their family is just one of the thousands of average earning families of the country.

And as some of the invited guests, including one of our staff, wandered around Tablas Island and the surrounding parts of Romblon, through the generosity of Chris Bech – we discovered the historic forts of Romblon.

During the Spanish colonization of the Philippines, the Spaniards built the twin fortresses of San Andres and Santiago on the two adjacent hills in the town of Romblon. For centuries, the twin forts made of coral blocks and bricks guarded the town against the Moro raiders and Dutch pirates.

Almost four centuries past, what were left are remnants of the twin forts – neglected and forgotten. Not even a historical commemorative marker or marble epitaph are there to remind Romblomanon of its existence and the role it played in history.

The San Andres Fort now houses Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services (PAGASA) Romblon observatory. The trail from ground zero to the fort is still evident, with stone steps that are still in good condition up to midway. The steps on the upper half of the trail are already broken. The walls of the fort are still standing but its grandeur is already lost and overpowered by the structures and equipments of PAGASA.

If the Fort San Andres suffered a sad fate, the Fort Santiago was worst. The trail to the fort is completely covered by soil, grass and bushes. We took sometime to find it just to see it almost empty. A barely noticeable wall covered by trees and grass is what’s left. Rumor has it, that there used to be a tunnel from this fort to the ground zero.

Sad to say, the twin forts of Romblon will just live in the history books, online chronicles, memories and word of mouths, unless the local or national government do something to restore and revive their lost grandeur. But until then, a part of Romblon’s past will remain buried on its own soil.
