Gov. Schwarzenegger In Favor of Same Sex Marriage in California – The Terminator, Arnold Schwarzenegger joins the calls of lawyers for gay couples and Attorney General Jerry Brown to allow same-sex marriages to resume immediately in the state.

Gov. Schwarzenegger says that the immediate resumption of gay marriages is the right thing to do. “The administration believes the public interest is best served by permitting the court’s judgment to go into effect, thereby restoring the right of same-sex couples to marry in California,” lawyers for Schwarzenegger said in the legal filing.

“Doing so is consistent with California’s long history of treating all people and their relationships with equal dignity and respect,” added the lawyers for Schwarzenegger.

Proposition 8 was struck down as unconstitutional earlier by US District Court Judge Vaughn Walker. Walker in his 136-page decision also gave a go signal for the resumption of gay marriages immediately. However later Wednesday he agreed to suspend them until he could consider the legal arguments he ordered to be filed by Friday.

Religious groups and anti-gay marriage advocates is seeking an appeal of the decision regarding Proposition 8 and said that the decision of US District Court Judge Vaughn Walker is an insult to the true concept of a family in the society.

“The ban was necessary to safeguard the traditional understanding of marriage and to encourage responsible childbearing,” says supporters of Proposition 8.

In the United States gay coupled can only legally married in six states which includes Massachusetts, Iowa, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire and Washington, D.C.
