The Discovery Channel Hostage Taking Incident – A gunman, police identified as James Jay Lee had been shot to death after he took hostages at Discover Channel’s headquarters. The hostage taker said that he hated the company’s shows which includes the show “Kate Plus 8”. He said that the show promotes population growth. Lee also said that he hates Discovery Channel’s environmental programming because it did little to save the planet.

The hostage taker took three hostages and among them are two Discovery Communications employees and a security guard. The three hostages escaped unharmed after the four-hour standoff Wednesday in Silver Spring, just outside the nation’s capital.

Police tried to negotiate with the gunman for several hours but seeing that it will not result to anything, tactical officers moved in. The necessity to take down Lee became paramount when authorities monitoring him on building security cameras saw him pull out a handgun and point it at a hostage.

“Humans are the most destructive, filthy, pollutive creatures around and are wrecking what’s left of the planet with their false morals and breeding cultures,” James Jay Lee wrote in a bitter manifesto on his website.

It was not the first time that James Jay Lee had encounters with the police for in February of 2008 he was charged with disorderly conduct after paying scores of homeless people to hold placards and protest against Discovery Channel’s “Save the Planet.” During his court trial and even on his website, Lee demanded an end to Discovery Communications LLC’s shows such as TLC’s “Kate Plus 8” and “19 Kids and Counting.”
