World Cup 2010 Semifinals: Uruguay vs Netherlands – The Netherlands defeated Uruguay, 3-2 in their semifinals match yesterday at the Green Point Stadium in Cape Town. The match was witnessed by more than 60,000 football fans.
The 3 goals of Netherlands came from Giovanni van Bronckhorst (17′), Wesley Sneijder (69′), and Arjen Robben (72′) while Uruguay’s 2 goals where from Diego Forlán (40′), and Maximiliano Pereira (90′ +1′).
Uruguay could have won this match if they had been more careful of their defense. They have allowed the Netherlands two consecutive goals after half time making Forlan’s game tying goal useless.
The collapse of the defense of Uruguay and their wrong training venue at a handball stadium seems to be the contributing factors in this game’s lost. There is also that “karma” factor which everyone seems to key in always. They say that Uruguay pay for their “cheating” against Ghana.
“Cheating” in this sense refers to Luis Suarez ala “God’s hand” imitation of Diego Maradona during the 1986 match where he blocked the ball from going into the goal. For this Suarez was penalized making him unable to play the game.
Both teams have tried their very best and it all boils down to who has the greater passion to win. Netherlands wants to reach the finals after close to 40 years of drought and become champions once again.
Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder were the man of the match. Sneijder already had 5 goals in the World Cup tournament making him one of the players with the most goals so far. Arjen Robben meanwhile has two goals.
Netherlands will face either Spain or Germany in the July 11 finals scheduled at 14:30 at Soccer City, Johannesburg.
