World Cup 2010 Finals: A Look at the Netherlands – Netherlands is a team that invented “Total Football.” This is a type of game which calls on any player to be prepared to assume any position at any time. It is a difficult strategy and the Netherlands is only one of the teams to actually use it every time.

A further definition of Total Football says,

Total Football’s tactical success depends largely on the adaptability of each footballer within the team, in particular the ability to quickly switch positions depending on the on-field situation. The theory requires players to be comfortable in multiple positions; hence, it places high technical and physical demands on them.

Because of Total Football, a Netherlands team, Ajax played some of their finest football ever, achieving home wins (46-0-0) for two full seasons (1971-72 and 1972-73), just one defeat in the whole of the 1971-72 season, and celebrating five titles in 1972 (the Netherlands national league, KNVB Cup, European Cup, European Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup).

In 1974 and 1978, Netherlands become the dominant force in the World Cup and it was also regarded as the golden era of total football. Many analysts says that Netherlands was also the best team ever that never have won a World Cup title.

This Sunday they will have a shot again at the championship after 32 years and 22 years after their last European Championship. Will Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder prove that indeed total football is still applicable in the field?

Let’s watch the FIFA World Cup 2010 preview on Netherlands…
